Denimology did an interview with Örjan Andersson, Creative Director of Cheap Monday. Pretty great stuff. Link to it here.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?
The interesting history of jeans in combination with the good looking and changeable fabric. Another important thing is all the youth and music culture groups that have dressed themselves in jeans for so many years in so many different expressions.

2) Last time I counted there were over 200 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest?
The good price in combination with a personal and modern look.

3) Who do you imagine is a typical customer?
A young music and fashion interested student.

4) Where do you get your inspiration from?
Stockholm.

5) Which style and wash of your jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?
Tight very stretch black.

6) Are there any essential jeans that everyone should have in their wardrobe?
I think you at least should have one pair of unwashed denim, one pair with a used look and of course one pair of black jeans.

7) What are the first pair of jeans you remember?
My parents gave me a pair of overalls when I was 5 years old because a wanted to get dressed as my father and he is a carpenter.

8) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have owned and why?
They are so many but I love all old things from the original brands together with Cheap Monday.

9) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have produced and why?
The Tight fit because of the unisex and timeless fit. It's our original fit and I have been wearing them my self every day since we received the first pair in March 2004.

10) How many pairs of jeans do you currently own and which are your favourites?
It's between 100 and 200 pairs I think and I have many favourites.

11) Are you a "wash your jeans after each wear" person or a "wear your jeans for six months before you wash them" person?
In the year of 2000 I was wearing a pair of unwashed hair n' hide Lee jeans for almost a year without washing them and they where so dirty that I got big boils all over my ass. So I had to go to the doctor and eat medicine to get rid of them.

12) Do you own jeans for different occasions (for instance I have work jeans, smart jeans, weekend jeans, holiday jeans, jeans for going to concerts in, jeans for gardening in) if so what have you got?
No.

13) Which is your favourite jeans shop?
Weekday.

14) Which celebs are currently wearing your jeans?
We don't brag about that and we are leaving it to the LA brands.

15) How important big an effect does it have on your sales when a celeb is seen wearing a pair of your jeans?
It's good when the right person uses them but the music and fashion interested student is more important for us.

16) Who is your current favourite denim icon (male & female). I am thinking the person who has the most denim style?
I like all the stuff that Rodeo Ben was designing for Wrangler and he was very denim stylish also.

17) Which person living or dead would you most like to see in a pair of your jeans?
David Bowie.

18) What is the worst denim crime?
What I think is a crime today is probably something that we will have in the collection in 5 years.

19) If jeans had not been invented, what would we all be wearing?
Nothing.

20) And finally, any predictions for denim in 2009/10

Spotlight: Narrow Boot, Nudie

We've had the narrow boot in our store for a couple of weeks now, and I think its such a great jean. I wanted to post some pictures and tell you a bit about the fit.
Our very own Melissa (who also happens to be the women's fit model for Nudie) tried these on recently and loved them.

This is such a lovely fit for women. It comes out slightly from the knee, which allows for the jeans to slip over a heel, making your legs look crazy long.

These jeans are great for guys to. For anyone that wants an option that's not skinny or straight, this is the way to go. Guys: plan on sizing up a couple of sizes, since it is the "narrow" boot.

I am starting a new thread that will be updated periodically here on our website, in hopes of explaining what is often seen as the confusing world of Denim. Hopefully this will help with such issues as care and fit guidelines.

First, a brief history of denim trousers.

The word denim comes from the name of a sturdy fabric called serge, originally made in Nîmes, France, by the Andre family. Originally called serge de Nîmes, the name was soon shortened to denim. Denim was traditionally colored blue with indigo dye to make blue "jeans," though "jean" then denoted a different, lighter cotton textile; the contemporary use of jean comes from the French word for Genoa, Italy (Gênes), where the first denim trousers were made.

The initial yarn is dipped in an indigo bath which turns the rope yarn yellow. Once it is removed and the dye oxidizes, it turns the classic blue color we associate with dry denim. I will elaborate on dry denim later on. There are several ways to dye the yarn used in denim jeans. a couple of terms will help in the explanation.

There are two components in the weave of denim fabric. the weft and the warp. It is the combination of the indigo dyed warp and the white weft that produces the traditional appearance of denim. Many other combinations are possible by changing the ratio of warp vs weft or dying the weft a complementary color.

The other fundamental difference among denim jeans is the wash process or lack thereof. A large majority of denim producers wash their jeans and subject them to abrasive treatments to produce an artificial wear pattern. Several Purist labels such as Nudie, APC, or even select divisions of Levi Strauss like LVC leave the denim unwashed. This is the raw denim as referred to here at Mode.

Our restock of the New Standards came in today. This is their classic style, virtually hasn't changed in 20 years. Selvage, straight cut, no embellishments, heavy construction. Size down 2-3 sizes, they run big and end up stretching a full size. Stiff as hell, but give it a week and you'll be feelin' fine!

They are of course unwashed and come with washing instructions that include extremist, semi-extremist, and ocean recipes. Be patient with these and give them at least 6 months before washing.

We did our first official "black Friday" sale ever. We figured instead of opening up at 5am like most other stores, we would just open at 1am, since our friends are up anyway. It turned out way better than expected and gives us hope that our little store can survive this economy, thanks to everyone that came. We'll be open from 12 to 9 as usual for the rest of the day, so definitely come in, we'll be marking stuff down all day. Plus, you can see our new displays.

Sometimes There’s A Man…

This weekend my plans to hike to the top of S**** mountain (near Mount St. Helens) while wearing a sasquatch costume were derailed after meeting the “owner” of the mountain: a toothless hard-rock miner with a bottle of Gold Rush wine and a bag full of gold. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam war so, in honor of the holiday today, I will tell you about the encounter.

It was foggy and dismal and all kinds of Oregon awesome out - ideal conditions for sasquatch photography. My friends couldn’t be convinced of this, however, so I set out alone into the rainy backcountry of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. After a frustrating day of muddy hiking and failed attempts to set the timer on my digital camera while wearing the sasquatch costume, I gave up and turned home. On my way back to Portland I noticed a bicycle in the parking lot of a park near the L— River and decided to ask the owner if he or she might be willing to snap some pictures.

I was still wearing the sasquatch costume (minus the mask) when I pulled into the parking lot and saw a man taking shelter from the rain in an outhouse. He had a guitar in there and was drinking Gold Rush wine. His name was James and he was a miner, he said, and agreed to take some photos for me under the condition that I drive him back up to his claim, where he had left his wallet - an adventure I happened to be in just the mood for.

His claim was deep in the woods — almost an hour and a half up sketchy forest service roads — and on the way he told me about living year-round on S**** mountain as a hard-rock miner.

It was a hard life, and the further we drove into the depths of the forest, the more amazed I became that he had ridden his bike clear down to the park where I had met him. He had been on his way to Portland, to sell a bag of rocks speckled with gold.

His claim was near a creek and consisted of nothing more than a tent and a small fifth-wheel. It was getting dark but he showed me where he spent his days smashing pieces of feltzbar and quartz into a powder to sift gold out of. The work was hard, he said, because his knees had been bad since serving as a hole rat in Viet Nam.

Hole rats, he claimed, crawled into holes and murdered Vietnamese soldiers with their “bare hands.” Like the minors of yore, he had a violent history. He claimed to be a good man, though, one who was haunted by
nightmares of the things he’d done. The only time he’d come near violence recently was when he had to run a claim jumper off his mountain with a pistol last year.

His mountain. He claimed that his family had mined the region for centuries and through a sophisticated grandfather clause (which he said he could prove with documentation, though I never saw it), the mineral rights to S**** mountain belonged solely to him. He referred to it lovingly as “my mountain” and would woop and yell and point to it and sing out, “I love my mountain! I don’t got much, but I got my mountain and they can’t never take that away!”

After grabbing his wallet he jumped in my car and I we drove back to the park where he could stash his bike and grab his bag of gold (he actually left the bag tied to the bike while we were gone). It was pitch black out now and dumping rain. He was good people and I’d agreed to drive him back to Portland. He spilled Gold Rush and tobacco all over my car, but was great conversation. When I dropped him off at a Mission downtown he left me with a handful of gold.

Good luck hard-rock miner, wherever you are. You are a true-blue American and if it weren’t for your sacrifices in Viet Nam you might not feel obligated to live on your mountain.

Sego Festival 3 this weekend

For those of you who don't already know, the 3rd annual Sego Festival is this weekend. Friday night we we'll be blocking off 100 N. off University Avenue right next to the store. 6 bands will play Friday night as part of the kick-off party. We packed the entire block last year and it was a ton of fun. New paintings done by 12 local artists will hang behind the bands playing and video art from local filmmakers will be projected.

Saturday will go all day at the Rock Castle Amphitheater. Most people don't know this place exists, and it is great. If you take Center Street in Provo east toward the mountain, you will run in to it. It is at the base of the mountain behind the Utah State Hospital. Check the schedule below for times of each band at all five stages, but over 50 bands will play. Again, local art will be on display, and tons of booths filled with local vendors selling art, clothing, food, jewelry and all kinds of good stuff.

On a personal note, this is a very special event for us at Mode. We are proud to help sponsor it, as all the participants are volunteer and donate tons of time and money to make this happen and keep the event free to the public. There is a wave of enthusiasm building in our community as everyone pitches in to create a cultural identity for our city. We are very passionate about not falling prey to apathy and normalcy by helping creative individuals find a voice in an otherwise sterile culture.
